Adopting Dogs & Puppies

We are currently practicing social distancing which means we are open to the public to those who are not symptomatic, if you feel unwell in any way, please wait until you are feeling better to visit us. Please read more about our current process via this link. Adoption Process

We have dogs and puppies big and small, all breeds and personalities. Your new dog will require lots of company, exercise, time and training to ensure a long and happy life. Please choose well to ensure the right dog for you, and that you are right for the dog, as it will always need to be part of your family and suit your lifestyle. We reserve the right to sell any animal in the refuge to you, and terms and conditions of sale are in place to ensure the long term welfare of the animals.

If you are renting through a real estate agent, we will ask to see the formal rental agreement stating “dog allowed” from your landlord or real estate agent (or an email if your lease is not up to date). If you are renting privately, we ask for a letter from the landlord giving permission for a dog, plus a copy of their rates notice to show proof of ownership. If you are a home owner, please bring a copy of your current rates notice to show proof of ownership. If you live in a unit or townhouse, we will also ask to see approval from the body corp to own a dog - this applies even if you own your own home.

This might sound like a lot of paperwork to provide to adopt a dog, but we want to ensure that once a dog is adopted, it is adopted for life and we want to try to reduce the circumstances that may result in a dog having to be returned to us. We thank you for understanding this.

If you own another dog we will ask you to bring your dog in to do a 'match up' with the dog you are interested in to ensure they get along. Also, all the family should meet and greet your potential new pet.

Make sure you know your local council regulations on dog ownership. We refer you to Local Law No 2 (Animal Management) 2011 in particular to fencing. "Dog owners are responsible for preventing their dogs from roaming and causing a nuisance. Suitable fenced enclosures are required to contain dogs on properties. The enclosure must be suitably constructed to prevent the animal from escaping".

Sunshine Coast Council Keeping and Exercising Dogs

We may need to do a check on your fences, and an interview process may be required for some of our animals.

Prices begin at around $250 which includes vaccination, micro-chipping, worming and de-sexing for grown-up dogs. A bond of $300 is required for a puppy which will be refunded to you when you bring the puppy back for de-sexing. Ownership will not legally transfer to you until the puppy is returned for de-sexing.

All the dogs and puppies you see below are currently staying with us at the Refuge.

Please note that although our website is updated as soon as we adopt, there is a chance that the animal you may be interested in may have been adopted by the time you visit them on site, so the sooner you visit us, the sooner you may have a wonderful friend to take home with you.

Breed: Husky/Bull Arab
Age: 4 years 4 months.
Sex: Female
Weight: 31 kg
AdoptionFee: $199
Summary: Holly is a part of our Forgotten Friends Initiative.

Azura Building Group and SCARS are partnering to support six wonderful dogs who have faced challenges and are now ready for a fresh start.
To help them on their journey, we’re giving:
Adoption Fee – Covered
Parasite Protection for 6 months
Food Supply for 6 months from Savourlife
Post Adoption Training Support Pack.

Holly is a shelter favorite, she is sweet affectionate, and full of character!
Holly was surrendered from a family home environment, she was raised with kids and enjoys their company.
Holly grew up with another dog but lacks generalized social skills when seeing unfamiliar dogs in the community. Holly can walk past calm and relaxed dogs from across the road and is happy to ignore them but is frustrated easily when the passing dog is excitable. We believe Holly would be best suited to be the only animal in the home. Holly and her new adopters will be supported with a training package to help her be a model member of your community making walks a pleasant experience for everyone. Holly's new adopters must be committed to the training process, be willing to attend one-on-one sessions with a trainer, and have time to do the necessary homework and practice. Potentially looking at 30mins per day practice and a private 1 hr session fortnightly.
Holly can be independent and spend time unsupervised in a yard when home alone however we still recommend 6ft secure fencing she can't see through if you have neighbouring dogs. Holly is calm and relaxed at home and very easy to live with. She is house-trained and will signal at the door if she needs to go out to the toilet. She sleeps through the night on her bed and didn't bother her foster carers. Holly does like to chew her toys but is not destructive of human items she is a very clever girl who likes learning and we are sure you and her will enjoy the training journey.
If you are interested in meeting Holly and are willing to commit to the training journey with her, your efforts will be repaid in love and doggie kisses one million times over!
Please visit our website and submit a dog adoption inquiry form and our Animal Behaviour Trainer Will be in touch to organise a meet and greet.

Hopper came to SCARS through no fault of his own. He has been so stoic and patient, enjoying outings and playtime with our volunteers. He loves car rides and sees the outside world with joyous, inquisitive delight. Toys and fuss are the way to Hopper’s heart - brace yourself for tug-of-war and ball games. We are looking for a quiet home, free from other dogs, cats or pocket pets. Hopper is house-trained and enjoys lounging on the sofa with his fav soft toy. Hopper is very loyal and wants to be close to his people. You'll need secure 6ft fencing to keep him safely at home. As Hopper has spent such a long time at the refuge, he will need a soft slow approach to re-teaching independence. Hopper would benefit if his new owners were retired, worked part-time or from home to help him adjust to being home alone and separated from his new family.
Hopper can be strong on lead when he sees something exciting, so his new owners need to be physically fit and ready to undergo a training program to ensure the continued success of the adoption.
Hopper lacks confidence around small children, so he will need to go to a home without any children under 16 years.
If you would like to know more about Hopper please visit our website and fill in an adoption enquiry and our Animal Behaviour Trainer will call you to make an appointment.

Rufus
Rufus
Male Neapolitan Mastiff Adult Medium
Name: Rufus
Breed: Neapolitan Mastiff
Age: 4 years 9 months.
Sex: Male
Weight: 54 kg
AdoptionFee: $350
Summary: **Currently in Foster - Please call to make an appointment 07 5494 5275***
Giant goof ball Rufus is a lovely boy. He is a beautiful strong boy and needs an owner who is physically fit and experienced with giant breeds. Rufus has plenty of pep in his step but given his size doesn't require long walks multiple times per day. In the hotter months he would benefit from access to aircon and or the ability to have a dip when he needs to help keep him cool. Given his size he is better suited to living with kids over 10 yrs who are confident around dogs. Rufus would make a great addition to the right family, who understands the needs of giant breeds.
Some words from his foster carer -
He sits, drops, stays and comes on command (for off leash work, it has only been done in the back yard).
He walks better than any dog I know, heals really well.
He sits and shakes when being fed.
He is very gentle with kids.
If he is in the mood he loves fetch.
He loves tug of war, although we don't play it as we have little kids and discourage rough play.
He is very food driven.
He doesn't bark even with dogs on the other side of the fence.
He is good with people.
He is great off lead with dogs in the backyard, but have not let him off the lead in public.
He is a lazy dog and can sleep most the day, but really is drawn to having you in sight. Will follow you and then lie down wherever you are.
We have him as an outside dog, however, he would really flourish as an inside/ outside dog and based on his behaviour of wanting to be around us, his past owners probably had him this way.

Sadie
Sadie
Female Rhodesian Ridgeback/Kelpie Young Adult Medium
Name: Sadie
Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback/Kelpie
Age: 1 year 4 months.

Weight: 22.3 kg

Summary: Sadie is a nice young girl. She loves her walks and is responsive to her handler. She enjoys a good romp and a game of tug. Sadie grew up around kids and is clean in her kennel. SCARS will support Sadie's new owners with training to help her be the most confident version of herself as she settles into her new home. Sadie needs a family who is home more often than not and who can commit to the long haul of her training. Sadie will be best as the only dog in the home, Sadie lacks confidence around dogs and would prefer to avoid them. Stone is lacking in confidence and has likely had little early socialization. He is slow to approach new people and build relationships but he is learning to trust and slowly building new relationships with us here at the refuge. Stone is quiet and clean in his kennel. He does enjoy playing tug once he trusts you. Stone has been very brave and is slowly learning about the different areas of the refuge.
Stone is seeking a quiet home that can provide consistency and stability. Stone's new family should have experience with nervous dogs and be understanding about taking things slowly. Stone could learn to live with older teenage children who are relaxed and prepared to have some patience while building their new relationships. Stone lacks experience with dog on dog interactions so would be better suited as an only dog. Stone's new owner must be willing to undergo training with him and SCARS will assist with his training needs.
We think Stone is a lovely young dog and he has so much potential. If you can provide a calm and stable home home for Stone you and he might be a perfect fit.
